The Food and Drug Administration is warning consumers of the potentially dangerous effects of the prescription drug Viagra on an unborn baby.
In an emailed letter to pharmacists, Janet Woodcock, FDA’s director of public safety, said the drug’s warning label is misleading because the drug was only approved for use in pregnant women, not for use in the children who are born with disabilities. The agency said it would update the label to state that the drug is not approved for use in pregnant women.
The letter, sent to drugmakers and their reps, said there are no FDA-approved drugs for Viagra, except for the prescription drug, and that women who are pregnant should not take the drug.
“The FDA has a duty to approve drugs for use in the children of pregnant women,” said FDA Commissioner Charles R. James Jr., the agency’s chairman.
“We’re concerned that the language of the drug label in the letter is misleading because it spells out the dangers of using Viagra in children and provides no basis for medical supervision,” he added.
The FDA has not issued a warning about the potential for an unborn child to have an erection until it has heard the child’s mother or another health care professional. The drug’s makers said in a statement that they are not planning on releasing the warning to the public.
